A 2025 study using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study analyzed over 6,000 children who were ages 9 to 10 at baseline and followed into early adolescence, and classified participants into three social media use trajectories: about 58% with little or no use, about 37% who increased to about one hour per day by age 13, and about 6% who increased to about three or more hours per day by age 13.
