Mote Marine Laboratory has a team dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating stranded manatees.

Different marine species require different relocation techniques: sharks and many fish are transported in water with high oxygen and active filtration, manatees are transported in purpose-built air-conditioned trucks, and river otters can be moved in specially designed cages similar to dog or cat carriers.

Aquarists and veterinary staff typically oversee the acclimation of relocated animals by gradually introducing animals to new environments and continuously monitoring their health and behavior during and after transfer.

Aquatic habitats should have appropriate water chemistry and established microbial communities before introducing animals to ensure suitable living conditions.
