Tropical Storm Jerry nears Leewards at 65 mph; hurricane possible by weekend

Tropical Storm Jerry has strengthened to maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and is centered about 355 miles east‑southeast of the northern Leeward Islands, moving west‑northwest near 20 mph and expected to pass near or just northeast of the islands Thursday night. The NHC says Jerry could become a hurricane by late Friday or Saturday, and tropical‑storm watches — including for Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, St. Barts, St. Martin, Saba, St. Eustatius and Guadeloupe — are in effect as 2–4 inches of rain, with attendant flash‑flood risk, are forecast.
