Kern High School District Adopts Policy Opposing Trans Athletes

Kern High School District’s board voted 3–2 in early October 2025 to adopt a Title IX resolution restricting girls’ sports to female students, making the district — which serves more than 40,000 students across 31 schools — the 16th California district or board to pass such an amendment. The resolution, authored by Chino Valley USD board president Sonja Shaw and framed as protecting girls’ sports, arrives amid federal enforcement actions: the U.S. Department of Justice has sued California over its existing policy on trans athletes and high‑school governing bodies (CIF) have publicly said they will not comply with a White House executive order on the issue.
