Greenland urges EU to invest in minerals and renewables

On Oct. 8, 2025 Greenland Prime Minister Jens‑Frederik Nielsen addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg, thanking the EU as a "trusted friend" and urging the bloc to invest in Greenland’s critical raw minerals, untapped hydroelectric potential, telecommunications (especially in the north) and two regional airports. Nielsen framed the requests as capital‑intensive projects requiring reliable partners, invoked climate change and Greenland’s self‑governing status within the Danish realm, and alluded to recent tensions with the United States over Arctic interest without naming a direct U.S. confrontation in the speech.
