U.S. imposes new tariffs on cabinets, furniture
Under a Sept. 29 presidential proclamation, new U.S. tariffs took effect Oct. 14 on imported kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, upholstered wooden furniture and softwood lumber. Cabinet/vanity imports face a 25% tariff through Dec. 31 that rises to 50% Jan. 1, upholstered furniture is set at 25% (30% Jan. 1), and softwood lumber at 10%, with caps for certain allies (U.K. 10%, EU/Japan 15%). Industry groups say the move could bolster domestic production but contractors and designers warn of near-term cost volatility; UBS estimates the cabinet tariff could add about $280 to an average single-family home.
